BUILT UP

Built-Up Roofing (BUR) stands as an optimal choice for flat or low-sloped roofs, particularly well-suited for expansive commercial properties. Among the most prevalent materials in contemporary commercial roofing, BUR represents one of the oldest ‘modern’ roofing solutions, tracing its roots back to the early 1800s. Its enduring efficacy, combined with technological advancements, renders it an increasingly efficient and reliable option for large-scale building structures.

This roofing method comprises multiple layers of materials laminated together, typically incorporating four fundamental components in various layering configurations:

  • Base sheet: Varieties include fiberglass, asphalt-coated organic sheet, or venting sheet with asphalt coating.
  • Felts or fabrics: Such as coal or tar-saturated organic felt, cotton fabric, or burlap, often layered in three or four iterations.
  • Bitumen: Utilizing asphalt, coal tar, or lap cement.
  • Surfacing component: Options like gravel, asphalt, mineral, or various coatings.

Advantages of Built-Up Roofing:

  • Versatility: BURs can be installed on diverse roof decks using appropriate substrates and can function as a part of fire, wind, and hail-resistant roofing systems.
  • Thermal Reflectivity: The surfacing materials of BURs can be coated with reflective substances to mitigate UV radiation and heat, positioning it as a robust ‘cool roofing’ alternative.
  • Longevity: When multiple layers are fused and enveloped within water-resistant asphalt, the resultant roof boasts an extended lifespan, often surpassing anticipated service durations.
  • Durability: Built-Up Roofs exhibit resilience against surface damage and high foot traffic due to their robust construction.
  • Protection: The multiple reinforced layers offer heightened protection, providing numerous barriers against potential leaks.

Repair and Maintenance of Built-Up Roofing:

While demanding minimal maintenance, built-up roofs can be effortlessly repaired using conventional, time-tested materials, consequently prolonging their service life.
